FORT MOULTIRE ABANDONED
January 6, 1861
The following is extracted from the Harper's weekly:
"THE country is thrown into a state of great excitment by the intelligence that, on christmas night,
Major ANDERSON, commanding the United States forces at FORT MOULTIRE, abandoned that fort, and removed all his command to FORT SUMTER. The guns at FORT MOULTIRE have been spiked, and the gun-carriages burned. FORT SUMTER IS a work of great strength, and, with the force now within it, commanded as it is, can be held securly against any army that South Carolina can bring against it."
Our correspondent from the Chinese front also reports back that the allied English and French forces have taken Pekin.
